Week 5/ Moody at URI and Barnett at Bowdoin

November 3, 2016

The Moody is an A level Interconference event and the most important event of the year held at URI. The Rams were excited to show off our new fleet of Whitecap FJs. Conditions were calm at reporting time, but the fleet promptly launched and towed to the race area and were greeted with a 4-6 kt easterly when they arrived. Racing was underway by 10:30 with no wind wasted. After 3A the breeze quit for the day. Sunday had lots of breeze as the remnants of Hurricane Matthew approached. Racing was called a bit before the 3:00 PM cutoff with gusts in the high 20s.

The Rams could only manage an 8th, losing a tie breaker with Brown. Rachel Bryer, Hannah Scanlon and Fraser MacKechnie were 6th in A. The Rams were 8th in B with Dakota Northrup and Brendan Read sharing the skippering with Kate Nota, Marisa Decollibus and Lauren Richards crewing. BU won the event with Bowdoin 2nd and Yale 3rd.

The Rams were also in action at the Barnett at Bowdoin where the sailing conditions were near perfect all weekend. It was a combined division event and 18 races were sailed over the two days. The Rams were 6th overall, but Matt Gibbs and Ryan Geib were 4th in the 18 boat fleet with Karel Mailloux-Kuz and Ian Nannig 15th. Matt and Ryan have been improving steadily and will be seeing more action at bigger events going forward.
