Fall 2014 – Week 4 Report

October 24, 2014

On Week 4 the Rams were busy at 4 events. Top priority went to the Hewitt at Dartmouth. The Hewitt is a 3 division affair sailed in FJs and 420s. We sent our top team: Caleb Armstrong/Elizabeth Dudrgin; Rachel Bryer/Fiona Christie; Matt Coughlin/Kaity Norton, with Courtney Bombardier on standby for the big breeze that didn’t quite happen. We got into a battle for the lead with Yalefrom the get go. Yale proved unstoppable in A, but Rachel and Fiona won B with Matt and Kaity 2nd in C. The Rams earned a solid second for the event and this was our best 3-division effort in years. It is certainly great to be on the podium!

Our keel boat sailors were at Salve Regina for the Olympians Trophy, sailed in Ynglings. Matt Wordell had the tiller with Cam Tougas and Ian White pulling the strings. The trio finished a strong 3rd in the 8 boat field. Another podium finish!!

The Smith Trophy at MIT is always a fun event sailed this year in Techs and Fireflies. Sam Cushing and Jack Hurley sailed in A both days and finished 10th. B Division honors were shared by Pat Penwell/Hannah Scanlon on Saturday and promising freshman Peter Girard with Matt Gibbs on Sunday. They combined for a very nice 4th in B Division. The team finished 7th in the 17 team event. Not a podium finish, but top half and far ahead of last year.

Finally, we were hosting the Gardiner Island Invite. This was a combined division affair and URI had 2 of the 9 teams. This was a great opportunity for some of our freshmen to get some experience, as well as some upperclassmen. The URI teams finished 4th and 5th in the 9 team field. Lots of Rams participated in this one with different personnel in each division each day. Many lessons learned!
