Joey Mello - Head Coach

In his three years of coaching the University of Rhode Island Sailing Team, Joey Mello and the team of 48 sailors, have exceeded expectations. Under his guidance the team has won many events, including the Moody, Marchiando and (2) Friis Trophies along countless other top. In addition, the team has also won the Kennedy Cup, the well known big boat event in Navy 44s, that qualifies the team for the World Cup (Fall 07).

Along with coaching here at URI, Joey has served as coach at Bishop Stang High School and Providence College, as well as the New Bedford Yacht Club. As a young sailor he was the founder of the Dartmouth High School Sailing Team, which has since grown to be a very successful varsity program in the NESSA confrence.

Joey returns to URI after graduating from the University in 2004 with a BS in Ocean Engineering. While at URI he sailed competitively for four years, sailing throughout New England and the rest of the country at many of the events his team now sail in. His recent experience as a college student and college sailor is an asset that team members can take advantage of.
