Nicholas Ewenson - Head Coach
Nick Ewenson is in his first year as head coach at University of Rhode Island. Originally from Newport, RI, he competed in Optimists, Lasers, Laser 2s,
and 420s on both the national and international level during his junior sailing career.
A graduate of Tabor Academy (Marion, MA) and St Mary’s College (St Mary’s City, MD), Ewenson has a strong background in organized team sailing
and has had success at the highest level. In 2004, he won ICSA’s Team Racing National Championship with SMC after finishing second the previous year.
Ewenson’s coaching experience spans over ten years and is diverse. He has run yacht club programs, taught disabled sailing,
tailored private sailing programs, and a lot in between. At the collegiate level, he has coached numerous All-Americans and won
5 National Championships over his five-year career at the College of Charleston. In 2009, he was named Team Leader for ICSA’s
BUSA Tour, where he assembled, organized, coached, and lead an ICSA all-star team through the United Kingdom.
Coach Ewenson continues to be an avid small boat racer and can be found at many of the top team racing events in the world.
He is a proud member of the Woonsocket Rockets, which finished 3rd and 4th at the 2007 and 2006 US Team Racing Championship
(for the Hinman Trophy), respectively. The Rockets have also been quarter and semifinalists at the British Open for the Wilson Trophy (2010 & 2009).
