University of Rhode Island Sailing Team Takes Second Place In World Championship
This is the third time the Rams have finished second in the world after doing so in both 1992 and 1993.
LA BAULE, France - The University of Rhode Island Sailing Team finished Second in the World Collegiate Keelboat Championship held Oct. 25-29 in La Baule, France.
Rhode Island finished two points behind Southampton Institute of England in the 12-team field.
The Rams won the first race, took second in race No. 2, finished third in races three and four and took fifth place in the fifth race. More racing was schedule for Friday, Oct. 29, but was called off due to the weather.
This was the third time Rhode Island had finished as the runner-up at the World Championships, having also accomplished the feat in 1992 and 1993.
The World Collegiate Keelboat Championships was a six-day competition that consisted of an overnight race, as well as several Olympic triangles and distance races along France's Atlantic Coast. Competitors sail in 35-foot Jenneau One Designs provided by the Regatta organizing committee.
The University of Rhode Island earned the right to represent the United States in the competition by virtue of its victory in the 2004 Kennedy Cup in Annapolis, Md. on April 18-20. It marks the ninth time in the last 17 years that Rhode Island has represented the United States in the world keelboat competition. Rhode Island boasts a first-place finish (1990), two-second place finishes (1992 and 1993) and a pair of third-place finishes (1988, 1998).
Members of the Rhode Island team representing the United States include: coach Scott Norris (Newport, R.I.), Sean Horrigan (Pawcatuck, Conn.), Morgan Paxhia (Milton, Mass.), Michael Campbell (Bristol, R.I.), Paul Simas (Cranston, R.I.), Benedikte Vermeersch (Luxenburg), Kerry Mahoney (Staten Island, N.Y.), Kyle Wilson (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Aaron Stott (Chicago, Ill.).

Rhody Finishes 2nd at Captain Hurst Bowl Intersectional
The University of Rhode Island Sailing Team traveled to Lake Mascoma, NH this past weekend to compete in the Captain Hurst Bowl Intersectional, hosted by Dartmouth College. The Rams finished 2nd, with 53 points,, out of a field 24 in this major intersectional event, beating all the top ranked teams. Harvard won overall with 38 points.
Sailing for URI were seniors Morgan Paxhia (Youngstown, NY) and Kerry Mahoney (Staten Island, NY) in "A" division, finishing 5th overall. In "B" division sophomores Matt Kastan (East Amherst, NY)/ Kristen Johnson (East Greenwich, RI) finished 4th.
This upcoming weekend the Rams compete in the Nevin's Trophy at King's Point and the New England Sloop Championship at Niantic Bay YC in lightnings.
