Rams finish 4th at Admiral Moore

    Admiral Moore Regatta
    New York Maritime
    March 13-14

The 20th ranked University of Rhode Island Sailing Team finished in fourth place out of 18 entries in the Admiral Moore Intersectional Regatta hosted by New York Maritime Academy this weekend. Rhody finished with 123 points in this 9 race per division series.

In "A" division senior Joey Mello '04 (Dartmouth, MA) sailing with freshman Steve Frazier (Toledo, OH) finished fifth with 56 points, just five points from second. Sailing in "B" division were Morgan Paxhia '05 (Youngstown, NY) and Kerry Mahoney '05 (Staten Island, NY) finishing seventh.

    REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

The day started out with a postponement in left over northerly at about 3 knots that was not enough to overcome the strong current in the East River. The regatta was taken out into Long Island Sound with a long changing float towed around to the point on the northern side of the Maritime College. Teams watched from the high ground as the regatta resumed in a light southeasterly.

The wind built through the day and went south as the teams finished in a sparkling hiking breeze. Nine races were accomplished in each division, and Brown University rolled up a solid victory over Hobart. Five out of the top six teams and seven of the top ten were from New England. Long distance travelers UC Berkeley and Queens of Canada finished 14th and 17th in the 17 school field.

Rams 3rd and 7th respectively at two major intersectionals

The Rhody Rams traveled to Dartmouth College on September 13th to compete in the Captain Hurst Bowl. The event was held in Flying Juniors, and in a light breeze. The late start on Saturday made it possible for only six races, in which Joey Mello and Kelly Anthony finished eleventh for the day in A division. In B division, Morgan Paxhia and Kerry Mahoney finished third for the day, four points behind St. Mary's in second. The second day held similar wind conditions, with breeze maxing out at only around five knots. Joe and Kelly stepped it up one position, while Morgan and Kerry slid into a close second, two points behind Vince Porter in first. The last beat of the last race of the regatta included Morgan and Vince in an extreme tacking dual in which Morgan eventually lost the dual when St. Mary's tacked on him. The Rams finished 7th out of 24 teams overall. This was a tremendous finish for the team, and essential to the rankings.

The sloop sailors traveled down to the Coast Guard Academy for the Vice Annual Pine Trophy. The event was held in J-22's, and the breeze on Saturday was anywhere from five knots to fifteen knots. The Rams started out slow, however, as the day progressed, they picked up the pace considerably finishing off with two wins in the last three races, and winning overall. Sunday was a different game for the sailors, as the wind swung to a light southeasterly. With three races left to sail, the Rams took two mediocre races, with two fourths. Three points behind Kings Point, and one point ahead of Hobart, the pressure was on. The Rams matched raced K.P at the start, forcing them to start poorly, as the Rams, themselves, won the start. Eventually, however, the left caved in halfway up the beat, and K.P rode in from the top right on a flyer, winning the race. Overall, the Rams finished third in the event out of ten teams, which also added to the rankings.

This past weekend was a big reward for the hard work that the team has been putting into practice. It shows that the team has an enormous potential, and that we're going to fight tooth and nail into the top ten.
