Week 5 – Lady Rams Superb at the Dellenbaugh

April 10, 2015

The Dellenbaugh at Brown was our premier event of the week. Nearly all of the top ranked teams in the country were there with their first teams.Rachel Bryer and Marisa Decollibus won the first and only set of the day on Saturday. The breeze started at about 15 knots and built to 25+ as the second race finished. That was it for the day as gusts to 40 rolled through. On Sunday Mackenzie Needham and Molly Lucyk opened up with a 15, 2 and the Lady Rams were in the hunt. Single digit finishes had been hard to come by in B, so this was a great development. Rachel and Marisa went on to win A and Mack and Molly added 1,4,7 finishes, but also lost a protest in one race. The Lady Rams had won on the water, but had to settle for 2nd overall. This was our best finish of the 2014-15 year and a big improvement from our 10th at St. Mary’s.

The co-ed team was at the Marchiando Team Race at MIT. Conditions were just as brutal in Boston, but the game was on with reefed mains and small jibs. The Rams were 4-4 early, but couldn’t buy a win after that and ended 4-11. The Marchiando attracted nearly all of the top team racing squads in the country and was the most competitive event for the Rams in the last two season. Many lessons learned. Caleb Armstrong-Matt Gibbs, Matt Coughlin-Adam Piispanen, and Sam Cushing-Jack Hurley sailed for the Rams. We will be better next year, all but Sam will be back.

The BU Trophy was blown out on Saturday (no reefs or small jibs available) and only 3 races per division were completed on Sunday. The Rams, with Patrick Penwell and Courtney Bombardier were in A with Patrick Isherwood and Ellis Havelock in B, finished 5th overall with Penwell-Bombardier 3rd in A.
