Strong Results Still Find Rhody Just Short of Qualifying for Nationals
Weekend 12 of the URI Sailing Team's season saw the team spread throughout New England. Events at Boston University, Coast Guard, Yale, Mass Maritime, URI and Salve Regina were sailed in a variety of boats from FJs, and 420s to Colgate 26s.
Highlights included two overall victories at Sloop Series 2 and the OToole Trophy as a 2nd place finish at the Southern Series. Mike Warren and Missy Hudspeth posted a top performance as boat by winning B Division at the George Morris.
The nationally ranked URI Women's Squad made their bid for nationals at the Reed Trophy. The team found themselves in contention through the entire event but would end 3 spots from qualifying. Leading this team was the A division tandem of Jen Curtin and Marisa Nixon, who finished a great season by finishing tied for 3rd in A Division.
We are also proud to hear the announcement that 3 URI Sailors were named to the All New England Team. Sophomore Emily Anderson was recognized as a top crew, while Senior Jen Curtin and Junior Kim Myer were recognized as top skippers. We are all incredibly proud of them and agree that this recognition was well deserved!

Costich, Bartley and Thompson named NEISA Sailors of the Week
Thompson, Cotich and Bartley lead URI to Victory in the Dinghy Tournament
Newport, RI 4/6/08- URI Senior Craig Thompson and his crews, Lisa Cotich and Brian Bartley came through with a clutch performance at the New England Dinghy Tournament hosted by Salve Regina. The trio dominated A-division finishing the top three in eight of the ten races and never out of the top five in fourteen boat fleet. They won three races and finished second three times to win the division by ten points over Salve's Michael Komar, Cassie Martin and Meredith Dart. For their performance Thompson Cotich and Bartley have been named the coed "Sailors of the Week" by the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association.
Dellenbaugh and Johnston Represent New England at St. Francis Intersectional
San Francisco, CA 4/6/08- Dartmouth's Becca Dellenbaugh and Sarah Johnston had an impressive weekend finishing third in A- division at the St. Francis Intersectional. In a fleet of thirty-one boats, they finished in the top two in five of the eleven races sailed and they only finished outside the top ten once. Dellenbaugh and Johnston proved that New Englanders who still have ice can hang with the best out west. For that they have been named the women's "Sailors of the Week" by the New England Intercollegiate Association.
Around the Conference:
In team racing action this Yale added to their resume as the team to beat by winning the Friis/Marchiando Trophies hosted by Tufts and MIT. The Elis posted a record of twelve wins and two losses while second place, BC, went nine and five. Tufts won a tie breaker over Brown and St. Mary's, all of whom were eight and six, for third place. Team makes progress, demonstrating the ability to hang with top teams
After a full week of practice the URI Sailing Team entered their 4 events ready to put up results. After lite winds to open all the events on Saturday the team went out and demonstrated that they are still a contender in the deep New England District.
At the Friis Trophy, the team made up of Greenfield, Chaikin, Whitman, Shea, Quatromoni and Gardiner, demonstrated URI is a deep team. The 6 sailors, no older than juniors, found themselves in the hunt with team like Boston College, Tufts and Brown. In the end, this group wasn't able to close out those top teams and found themselves on the outside of the gold fleet final. The squad would end with a 6 and 8 final score; a sub 500 record but a good effort by this group.
At the President's Trophy hosted by Boston University, the team of Nixon, Curtin, Myer and Anderson, set out to overcome their demons of the Charles River. A first day performance with no races outside the top 10 found the team in third overall. While A division only had 1 race within the top 5 B division would only have 1 outside. Kim Myer and Emily Anderson would win B division honors while Curtin and Nixon finished 5th and the team placed 5th overall. The overall placing is a bit deceiving as the team was only 12 points out of 1st and 7 points from 2nd.
A last minute switch saw Salve hosting the New England Dinghy Tournament. This was URI's qualifier for Dinghy New England’s and the team showed the seriousness of event with their intensity. The conditions through the weekend range from light and moderate to breeze on and large waves. URI showed they had the answers for the variety of conditions. Demonstrating the ability to boatspeed in breeze and boathandle in the lesser winds. Overall the squad of Baitinger, Bartley, Thompson, Costich, DeCollibus and Dovbniak sailed well. The team would eek out a win over a strong Salve Team. The combo of Craig Thompson and Lisa Costich lead the events A division from the first set on and Brian Bartley would go in for Lisa to close out it out in the end. For thier great sailing the trio were named NEISA's sailors of the week!
The team takes it's next step towards a national bid this weekend at Salve. A top 9 finish at this event will enter the team into ICSA's National Semi Final. Go Rams!!!

Rams a little slow out of the gates, but don't expect it to last!
Weekend 9 of the spring was the first weekend of full competition for the URI Squad. The team would head out to five separate events spread throughout the Southern New England and Boston Area. Of those 5 events there were 3 different intersectionals, two of which were team races.
Central Series Three- 6th out of 18
Southern Series Three- 8th out of 19
Women's Dellenbaugh- 9th out of 18
Ferrarone Team Race- 5th out of 10
SNE Team Race- 18th out of 18
After the large effort put into training during spring break, the squad had high expectations for the weekend. In the end, the results fell slightly short but that doesn't mean the expectations have changed. The team looks to regain their form for weekend 10, when they begin their final pushes for Fleet Race Nationals, both Women's and Coed.
